Lesson Three - A Simple Sales & Expenses Worksheet

DESCRIPTION:

This lesson reenforces the use of sum function. Students learn how to calculate profit using Excel.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES:

At the end of the lesson students should be able to :

  1. Identify Sales and Expenses figures
  2. Calculate Profit
  3. Correctly use the Sum Function

Remember the Format for the SUM function

=SUM(first cell address : last cell address)

  1. Remember to start the function with the equal sign
  2. The word SUM follows the equal sign
  3. An open baracket is next followed by the address of the first cell in the range
  4. A colon comes next followed by a closing bracket

  1. Go to Chapter 14 - Spreadsheets - Log On to IT for CSEC 3rd edition
  2. Complete Activity 1 on page 308 if you have not already done so
  3. Add the Label Profit in cell A5
  4. Place formulae in cells B5, C5 and D5 to subtract Expenditure from Sales
  5. Use the Sum function in column E where needed - E3, E4
  6. Save the file on your flash drive as Wholesalers

3.0 Change the Worksheet

  1. Change from 50400 in cell B3 to 54000
  2. Centre align all the values
  3. Change the orientation of the lables in cells B2, C2 and D2 to 45 degrees
  4. Wrap the lable in cell B1

What formula do you think should go in cell E3?

Use the SUM function in the range E3:E5. That is Cells E3, E4 and E5.

  2. Start a new sheet
  3. Enter the data as seen in Figure 14.24
  4. Follow the instructions from 1 to 10
  5. Rename the sheet Payroll
  6. Send your worksheet as an attachment to an email with the title Spreadsheet Activity 3
