The Public Cloud

The Cloud is a metaphor for a global network. When you think of the public cloud think of the Internet.

This lecture focuses on:

  1. What the Cloud is
  2. Cloud Service Providers
  3. Advantages to cloud usage
  4. Cloud computing
  5. What the cloud is not

What the Cloud is

The Cloud refers to a network of servers that allow you to run software and services on the Internet instead of on your personal computer.

Some servers provide an online service, like Adobe Creative Cloud, and others allow you to store and access data, like Instagram or Dropbox and Mega .

Cloud Service Providers

Microsoft Office 365, Apple iCloud, Netflix, Amazon Cloud Drive, Flickr, Google Drive, and Yahoo Mail are all cloud services.

Advantages to cloud usage

Documents, videos, photos, games and other software stored in the cloud are available on any device including tablets and smartphones with an Internet connection. You can access your files from anywhere in the world.

Disadvantages to cloud usage

  1. An internet connection is needed
  2. Cloud storage speed is slower than local backups
  3. Security concerns may exist because data is stored remotely
  4. You need to download special software for each device using the service

Cloud Computing

Cloud computing means storing and accessing data and programs over the Internet instead of on your computer's hard drive. Cloud storage is a service where data is remotely maintained, managed, and operated by a cloud storage service provider.

What the cloud is not

Storing data on a home or office network does not count as utilizing the cloud.

When you store data on or run programs from your hard drive, that's called local storage and computing. Everything you need is physically close to you, which means accessing your data is fast and easy, for that one computer, or others on the local network. If your computer is stolen or if it stops working then you have no chance of accessing yourfiles unless you have backups
